Gionbashi
November 2004
Gionbashi.....It is a wonder that it stands,
but I heard that the tilted stone pillar keeps it from
collapsing.
The old lady I met last time said that she heard about
this water being red with blood
at the Amakusa Shiro revolt. When she was the little girl,
she remembers picking grean
"nori" in the spring. This water raises when
the tide comes in.
Rugged stone bridge, it is a miracle that
it is still standing.
There is a shrine across the bridge.
This is Martyred Park in a different place
where the Spirit of the people at Gionbashi,
"Gion Bridge" is enshrined.
This is where the divided heads of the martyred
Christians
who didn't step on the "fumie" are buried.
